1.4 What Does Ethics in the Aviation Profession Mean to You?

What does it mean to be ethically correct in the aviation industry? To answer this, we must first define the word itself. According to Merriam Webster, the definition of ethics is "the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation" (2021). In his book, Life Principles: Feeling Good by Doing Good, Bruce Weinstein once stated a perfect statement as to what I believe ethics is in the aviation industry. This statement was, "Do no harm, make things better, respect others, be fair, and be loving" (Weinstein, 2005).

Like many other professions, I believe that safety is the number one priority for ethical behavior in the aviation industry. As a pilot, you would never willingly do something that could either jeopardize or threaten the safety of both your crew and passengers. You are responsible for delivering your passengers safely to their destination, and if harm does arise, a pilot will do everything in their power to mitigate the danger. In addition, I believe that a pilot should also be conscious of details concerning flight safety. They should not skip any steps that could harm others.

Respecting others is the second most important ethical behavior needed in the aviation industry. If you don't respect your employers or employees, you start to affect work ethics along with moral ethics. If workers do not respect their boss, they will not work at 110% to achieve 50% appreciation. The last situation you want is for there to be a problem with the aircraft due to the lack of work ethic caused by the lack of respect. I also believe that pilots have a duty to respect one another in the work area. For example, I think that pilots should use constructive criticism between one another. According to the airline pilots association, pilots will " know and understand the duties of each member of their crew. If in command, they will be firm but fair, explicit, yet tolerant of deviates that do not affect the flight" (Anonymous, 2022).

Ethics is not something that we think about on a regular basis. However, they do affect us and the choices that we make day to day. If we forget ethics in the workplace safety and respect would be lost and disaster would occur.
